Our origins
Winningen is my home. This is where I grew up, and this is where I make my wines.
Our vineyards
are all within Winningen and offer a broad range of slate soils. Slate is the defining rock of the Mosel. Many millions of years ago, it formed the floor of a tropical sea. Continental movements brought it to the surface under immense pressure, and today it covers our terraced vineyards. Its distinctive mineral character shapes the taste of our wines.
Uhlen
The “hill of the owls” (Uhlen) is one of our Grand Cru sites and the largest terraced vineyard site in Germany. Twenty-nine dry-stone walls rise above one another to form an impressive cultural monument. Its differing slate types divide it into three areas; our vineyards lie exclusively in the Laubach section. Here, the slate has a high lime content and contains many fossils. We grow only Riesling in Uhlen, with some vines over 80 years old. The wines combine finesse, minerality and fruit.
Röttgen
Röttgen is also a Grand Cru site.
Its name comes from the German word for clearing land. In the early 19th century, winegrowers discovered the exceptional quality of the soil and cleared the area of hedges and woodland, creating a unique vineyard for future generations. Our vines grow here on steep south-facing slopes, sheltered in a gentle hollow.
The soils have a higher iron content. The wines are elegant, delicately fruity and marked by vibrant acidity.
Brückstück
Around 1330, stone was quarried here for Koblenz’s Balduin Bridge, rolled down into the valley and transported to Koblenz by boat. Volcanic eruptions 15,000 years ago left magma that later cooled into basalt.
The soil is characterised by Devonian slate and pockets of pumice deposited here around 12,000 years ago during the eruption of the Laacher See volcano. The wines impress with clear fruit and harmonious minerality.
This is where we mainly grow the grapes for our Schiefer wines.
Hamm
The name derives from the Latin “hamus”, meaning hook: the Mosel makes a striking bend here. Hamm is similarly steep to Uhlen, rising skywards in many small terraces.
The clay-rich slate breaks into fine fragments, creating loose, light soil. The vines can root deeply and obtain the nutrients needed for our village wines.
Domgarten
Both Aachen and Cologne cathedral chapters owned vineyards here in the Middle Ages.
The site extends around the whole village. Quartzite, loess, pumice and sandy slate create a rich variety of soils.
This is where we grow our estate wines.
Working in harmony with nature
We remove invasive plants that threaten the native flora.
Unused areas of the vineyards are enhanced with trees, shrubs and nesting sites to support biodiversity.
In the cellar
After a long ripening season and careful tending, the grapes are harvested by hand and brought to our cellar in autumn. Here, they are processed gently and with care. Quality grows in the vineyard and is shaped and refined in the cellar.
Our wines ferment spontaneously with wild yeasts, sometimes over several years. This creates the unique aromatic character that distinguishes our finest wines.
